Caprese Salad (Insalata Caprese)

Ingredients

  • 6 ripe tomatoes

  • 10 ounces of buffalo mozzarella

  • 1 bunch of fresh basil

  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano

  • 6 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil

  • Salt, to taste

  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut off the stem end of each tomato and discard. Slice the tomatoes into ¼-inch rounds.

  2. Slice the buffalo mozzarella into rounds of similar thickness. Because the cheese is soft and delicate, use a sharp knife and cut gently.

  3. Arrange one tomato slice on a large serving platter. Season lightly with salt, freshly ground black pepper, and a pinch of dried oregano.

  4. Tuck a fresh basil leaf beneath the tomato slice so it peeks out slightly, then place a slice of mozzarella beside it. Continue arranging the tomato, basil, and mozzarella in an overlapping pattern around the edge of the platter, seasoning each tomato slice as you go.

  5. Fill the center of the platter using the remaining smaller tomato and mozzarella slices, continuing the same layering pattern and seasoning.

  6. Finish by generously drizzling the entire salad with extra virgin olive oil. Serve immediately at room temperature for the best flavor.

Chef’s Tip

For the finest flavor, allow the tomatoes and mozzarella to come to room temperature for about 20–30 minutes before assembling the salad. This simple step enhances the sweetness of the tomatoes and the creamy texture of the mozzarella.
